In July 2016, after our hugely successful re-design and build of the famous QE2 and now QM2 Crew Bar ‘The Pig and Whistle’ Cunard contacted us again with the challenge to design and build a Sports Bar within a little used space called the Odeon Bar.
Our in-house designer Guri, pretty much hit the brief with the first concept, which we then developed into a full design and build proposal. The project did not immediately go ahead but was scheduled as an in-service project to be carried out between Southampton – Nova Scotia – New York – Southampton during June 2017.
Atlantic Marine Interiors was awarded this project as part of a ‘two ship deal’ along with the complete refurbishment of the Officers Mess, Staff Mess, Crew Mess and Crew Bar Lounge on the sister ship Queen Victoria, taking place in Palermo dry dock during May 2017.
As always with in-service projects especially with so many days at sea it was imperative that the planning was perfect. With only one opportunity to get all required materials, consumables, tools etc. loaded correctly onto the vessel in Southampton on the day of departure, along with our multi-disciplined team of Tradesmen and Project Manager.
Over the next 2 weeks, the complete space was stripped and re-built.
The existing bar was modified in size and shape, some 40% of the existing deck head was replaced and re-sprayed. With new electrical, lighting and AV system cabling installed.
The following was renewed;
- LED dimmable ceiling lights
- USB charging points
- Complete AV system with two cinema style screens, plus four more screens all independently multi channelled.
With brand new:
- Back bar and equipment,
- Bar top and front,
- Sub-deck and deck coverings,
- Fixed stadium seating,
- Feature tiled wall,
- Digitally created multi-sport feature wallcoverings,
- Multi themed fixed and loose furniture,
- Dart boards and pool table etc.
Full completion and contractual handover were achieved two days ahead of schedule. The Ship’s Hotel General Manager arranged an opening ceremony and evening by two members of the England Rio Olympics Gold medal winning woman Hockey team, who were passengers on the cruise!
A great evening and a project to be proud of.
